How does that saying go?? "Honesty is the best policy". Critiquing is important.. it's always good to learn, just to hear other views... can be fun, maybe grow from it and become better.

There was a time that would have hurt my feelings--now I would probably laugh, delete it and try again.

Re: There are varied reasons for not giving critiques or full appraisals
Thank you Raye... I don't think I can give a professional opinion on poetry, but I can point out glaring suckedness when I see it lol.

There are varied reasons for not giving critiques or full appraisals
on this site, imo. For myself, I don't feel all that qualified to give really in-depth analysis and I shy away from being negative because my time here is a break from the stresses of life. I enjoy positive, easy going interaction. Not saying it isn't genuine - the bonds of friendship when established over the longer haul definitely are and they do allow for honesty, but perhaps for judgement or grading on the quality of our work, that would work better as a separate category. Maybe a suggestion to Blogit - having a space/system just for creative works that the authors want critical reviews on. Still not sure I would feel confident about my ability to give critiques, but I would definitely love to have my work reviewed in such a setting. Then again, time constraints are an issue for many, wonder if anyone would have time to offer critiques? Could be there would be more posters than commenters...:)
Well, just a mishmash of thoughts. Interesting and refreshing post!

Re: Utahjay - it seems the only people who I can't "debate" politics with
are those glued to FOX news all day.  I did just watch a great interview on O'Reilly with Jon Stewart!  I agree with you on the poetry and the responses.  I think most just want clicks, which is fine - but tell me how you really feel while you're here!

I openly asked for critiques to help me become a better poet, a better writer, but only two will be honest...I would rather have a comment telling me what is off about my work than to have no comments. Seems folks here are 1. afraid they might hurt feelings, and 2. No one wants to comment on poetry that shows the darker side of life. I have posted poems that I have been paid to publish that get no comments at all, and then received a handful of comments on something quickly arranged. I once got a comment on a mistake when I posted the word 'gray' all by its little lonesome. So who knows how this system works. PS, I will get back to our discussion on Beck a little latter today or Tuesday...we can be friends and disagree on politics I hope.

Re: i just write what i feel of the moment....I am no poet I do enjoy
I guess that was my question, do you care what people think, or do you really want an honest opinion.  I know for a fact there have been writers/poets here in the past who truly wanted critical opinions in order to improve or to just know they touched someone else.

Re: Not to belabor a point, but you are definitely a poet, as are many
others here - way better than some of the poets on the so called "poetry" sites I've encountered.  I guess what started the conversation with myself and a couple of the others was wanting to branch out onto other poetry forums and the fear of being smacked down after being told we were the bombdiggity here!

For me it has always been about how I felt about my poem(s) and the meaning I wanted to reflect so I write to satisfy myself! Now, if the intent is confusing I always make it clearer! I think it's constructive to tell a person, I could say poet but I do not put myself in that category, if they see something in a poem that could be improved for the sake of imagery. Thanks for the mention, you humble me so! And I have told you in the past and it bears repeating, you have written some outstanding poems, many among my very favorites, and I don't want you to forget it. You also know I beg for them and you always appease me, so there! I mean everything I have said, too! So RIGHT ON, EH! sammie
