Try going to a salesman & saying,"Give me your Lowest, rock-bottom price!"
They'll give you a price and CALL it "rock bottom," but we all know that if you don't accept it, they will give you a better one, as you walk toward the door. If I have already told a salesman that I refuse to go through that whole song and dance, the charade of being told, "I'll try running your offer past my supervisor, but I don't think that he's going to be okaying it." The gesturing, the raised voice, and pseudo-tantrum are all theatrical performances, put on for your benefit, and to try for a higher price than what the customer has offered. If being forewarned that I WILL NOT haggle, doesn't sink through their heads, when I go through their door, for the very last time, maybe it will convince them that the tired old act that they insist upon inflicting on their customers, has a long grey beard, and we refuse to sit still for another performance. As you pegged it, this is INSULTING.
