dizzilizzi, fiction is what we can dream up, science can go beyond that.
Or what is science for?

Type 2 diabetes defined for the layperson:

The insulin cells (known as the "Islets of Langerhans", in the pancreas) fail to produce enough insulin to allow your body to use the sugar which is being consumed (or produced within your body), and not enough to supply your cells with the sugar they need for energy.

Insulin is a hormone which allows simple sugar (dextrose) to pass into the cell to be used for fuel.

True controlled and repeatedly confirmed studies do not show refined carbs (sugar and starch) to cause diabetes other than being another way to make one so overweight that then pancreas cannot keep up.

Studies strongly suggest that some ethnic lines suffer more type 2 diabetes than the prevailing population because their metabolism is geared to get and store food intake too efficiently versus modern overeating and lack of exercise.

Science is stranger than fiction .. that's what they want us to believe.

Strange sometimes the way research is designed or conducted.

I have heard that Diabetes 2 comes from eating starch and sugar

until the adrenals are blown out.  Starch--the white flour and white rice kind--is cheaper than good solid bread and fresh vegetables and protein.  Sugar is a cheap fast pleasure in a world of expensive pleasures and gratifications that can't be achieved.

A crappy atmosphere can't help.  But--it is not the simplest answer.
