Ciel, I'm so glad that you drop in to my blogs and leave such neighborly comments, but I keep coming here expecting to read something of yours too.  I will keep checking until you get back in the groove.
In the meantime, I am whistling a merry tune while waiting.

The guy who builds the park gets my vote.
Walmart can hire the guy who built that.

BTW, did you know that the U.S. Income tax used to be
just on the very wealthy? The working man wasn't expected to pay income taxes. The idea extended to average folks when WWII started, and the country needed everyone's help to finance the war.

Naut, I see your point. Points, actually.

Even sitting here in bleak and rainy chill... watching what is happening weatherwise mid-continent, I am glad to be here rather than there.

I wonder what you get for all those taxes paid, that we don't have covered by government management.  Not suggesting that socializing everything is a good thing.  Just acknowldeging that nothing is free, ultimately, it is a matter of controlling where money goes, not who pays.

Re: Many of the very wealthy do philanthropic things with their money,

I totally agree, about education!

Bill Gates' father is one of those promoting this new tax, by the way...

Re: Fantastic idea about the campaign funds and wasted trees!

Yes, I would also like to see jobs stay in-country!

There will always be a need, even if everyone is employed well enough to raise their own families comfortably,  for programs that support and improve education, municipal services and other general needs.

Ciel

Heavily taxing the 'richest' (which always requires a definition and can span a wide range indeed) does not significantly add to the overall take, as has been shown time and again. 'Penalizing' the wealthy is really little more than a sop to groups committed to a 'politics of envy.'

Speaking of envy, you have no state income tax in Washington? I'm envious, LOL. We certainly have a provincial income tax here in Ontario, aside from our sales tax, which is 13%.

Here's the breakdown of the various brackets of the Ontario income tax, which of course is added to the Federal one:

5.05% on the first $37,106 of taxable income, +
9.15% on the next $37,108, +
11.16% on the amount over $74,214

Suddenly Washington doesn't look so bad, does it?  And on top of that you have milder winters than we have...

Many of the very wealthy do philanthropic things with their money,
I'm thinking of Jimmy Buffett and Bill Gates -- one thing about setting up foundations and controlling the giving, you can choose where your charity will have the most impact, do the most good. With taxes, so much of it gets nibbled by fraud and waste, and correcting problems takes months, years...  If I could decide where my tax dollars went, I think they'd go to better educate children, and to help ambitious, hard-working students afford to go to school. That's what I consider a good long-term investment.

I'm afraid we can ask "Why?" and "What if...?" all day long and never ever get a sensible answer.  I was just reading Northsage's post and there are a lot of questions there too that will be/have been evaded by those with the answers.  But, we need to keep asking.

Fantastic idea about the campaign funds and wasted trees!
If only..:) Also a great idea about the wealthy and taxation in your state. Heck, if they'd just create decent paying jobs that stayed in the U.S. instead of going overseas, that would be a start. They could also donate to keep programs going that help the less fortunate. Thought provoking piece.
