I have a cousin a few years younger than me and I remember when she got polio as a tiny baby.  My auntie had brought baby cousin over to show my mom symptoms that she did not understand.  I was about five and I remember her crying and feeling so helpless.  Mom told her to get the baby to a doctor and she did and found out what was wrong.  From that point, it was a continuous endeavor to help her become normal.  Someone did a very good job of working with her as she has very small deficiency because of it.

Good move for mom to apply some physical therapy...glad she and Allan were willing to endure that hardship.

Poor little lad Kabu, they used to wheel them on long trolleys over here, but your poor little chap seems to have so much pain you are lovely really.

Awful to see, and you bring it to life. Wonderful writing.
My best buddy Dell had polio in the big epidemic of 1950 (or was it '51) when we were high school freshmen. It left him with a limp, but over time he got healthy enough to play sports and go into the army. I know your Allen will do okay, but for now it's so damn tough!

I imagine the job Allan's father had was a fascinating one...I can only in the case of his mother working on his legs how painful that must have been!
