Another update, Corbin - I'm following this too,

in the interest of terrorist threat containment and free speech. It is a complex issue/balance -doing one without destroying the other and does require vigilance by the citizenry. Factual information serves this need best, when it can be clarified and understood. Usually takes a little time for the full truth to be known; my perspective right or wrong...:)

From cnet:
More details are surfacing about why Blogetery.com, a blogging platform that claimed to service more than 70,000 blogs, was mysteriously booted from the Internet by its Web-hosting company.

The site was shut down after FBI agents informed executives of Burst.net, Blogetery's Web host, late on July 9 that links to al-Qaeda materials were found on Blogetery's servers, Joe Marr, chief technology officer for Burst.net, told CNET. Sources close to the investigation say that included in those materials were the names of American citizens targeted for assassination by al-Qaeda. Messages from Osama bin Laden and other leaders of the terrorist organization, as well as bomb-making tips, were also allegedly found on the server.

But Marr said a Burst.net employee erred in telling Blogetery's operator and members of the media that the FBI had ordered it to terminate Blogetery's service. He said Burst.net did that on its own.

Many speculated that the FBI was using the Patriot Act to silence bloggers. But Marr emphasized that the FBI has never ordered Burst.net to stop service to any site it hosts without a court order and that the vast majority of Burst.net's communication with the federal government has involved agents serving warrants related to terrorist or child porn investigations.

"They have to go through the legal system," Marr said. "A judge has to issue an order."

Marr said the FBI contacted Burst.net and sent a Voluntary Emergency Disclosure of Information request. The letter said terrorist material, which presented a threat to American lives, was found on a server hosted by Burst.net and asked for specific information about the people involved.

Here's an article from....

the Louisville Defender (left leaning) that feels the same way......

Did these WordPress blogging platforms get shut-down for cause, or for more sinister reasons?

That is a good question. The web-hosting service Blogetery has been shut-down by United States authorities, affecting over 70,000 blogs in the process. The reason given was a "history of abuse" which seems to indicate that laws were being broken. These could possibly include illegal file sharing, copyright infringement, child pornography or even a terrorist connection.

The curious aspect to the case is that to shut down a website, some type of court order would typically be required, on top of the fact that many of the 70,000+ websites affected were most likely operating within the law.

So how does the government step in to do this? The hosting company that Blogetery used, BurstNET, issued the following statement:

"Please note that this was not a typical case, in which suspension and notification would be the norm. This was a critical matter brought to our attention by law enforcement officials. We had to immediately remove the server."

When speaking to the fact that details concerning the shut down could not be given, a BurstNET spokesman said, "Simply put: We cannot give him his data nor can we provide any other details. By stating this, most would recognize that something serious is afoot.”

More likely than not good reasons exist for the shut-down of some of the websites involved, but it is hard to imagine that all 70,000 were in violation of the law. So how is this done, in a democracy, without normal due process of the law?

Re: Did you read their statement?
Who applied the pressure?

On the evening of July 9, 2010, BurstNET® received a notice of a critical nature from law enforcement officials, and was asked to provide information regarding ownership of the server hosting Blogetry.com.

On your rejecting thingy...good for you.....I do the same thing when dealing with unbridled arrogance and pomposity......

Did you read their statement?

"Upon review, BurstNET® determined that the posted material, in addition to potentially inciting dangerous activities, specifically violated the BurstNET® Acceptable Use Policy. This policy strictly prohibits the posting of “terrorist propaganda, racist material, or bomb/weapon instructions". Due to this violation and the fact that the site had a history of previous abuse, BurstNET® elected to immediately disable the system."

BurstNET made the decision to terminate service, not the government.

I reject terrorism and propaganda-i.e.: un-based fear mongering - no matter the source.

Re: Shutting down a platform for al Qaeda violates freedom of speech?..hmmm..
Then why didn't they shut down the one site instead of 70+ thousand other sites that were not posting such material?

It's a platform...not a blog.   It  allows allowed 73,000 people to post blogs.  Anytime there was a problem with a blog site, blogetry handled it within 24 hours.

Nice to see a prog actually concerned about terrorist activity....whodathunkit?
