The horror of what humans can do to each other. Terrible story, Nautikos, and it is heartwarming to see young people like Amy wanting to do something to stop things like that from happening. Excellent posts, Pat-B.

Pat

I am very impressed with Amy and her commitment. The whole theme brings back a moment that still haunts me.

Several years ago I was visiting some people, and their daughters had a friend over, her name was Emily, a vivacious girl with a brilliant smile, who was from either Rwanda or the Congo, I forget which. The girls, sixteen and seventeen, were out on the deck, chatting and giggling and having fun. It was sunny and reasonably warm, but they were all wearing long-sleeved sweaters, with the sleeves pulled way down, covering their hands completely, and sort of dangling.

And I, making small talk, said I had noticed that before, and that it was a funny fashion these days, with girls wearing those sweaters with extra long sleeves. “Look at that Emily, for example,” I said. “Well,” I was told, “Emily has no hands. They were chopped off with a machete and she was raped by soldiers when she was eleven…” It felt as if I had been kicked in the gut…
