I've seen myself in seventeen-year-olds a time or two and wondered
how mother let me keep on breathing. And I take comfort in knowing that cynical know-it-all attitude covers a wellspring of uncertainty.

Yes, but this kind of stupidity haunts every generation. I do try to consider the deeper situations behind behaviors, but this kid makes it really hard to be generous.
