Agreed Guy, we are experts at generalizing about each other. In a way it's a kind of laziness. THanks for visiting and commenting. all the best.

Re: wileyJohn

THanks for your visit and comment John.

The comment came from the representative Muslim council that takes exception to extremism. From a pacifist point of view I wish everybody, irrespective of their religious and ethnic, would denounce violence and start talking about their differences. I understand though cannot quote the source, that Winston Churchill said at one point: 'More jaw and less war.'

Re: Nautikos

Thanks for your visit and your comment.

No, I have not studied the Koran, however I know that many moderate Muslims in the world resent being put in the same category as extremists who try and perpetrated their fanatic ideologies. My point was only that generalization makes the matter worse. Muslims are not automatically Islamists.

My own life's history has made me extremely sensitive about this kind of over-simplification. I do not like it when people generalize about Jews, so why should I accept generalization about other groups?

Really, I hate to do this - but I have to tell you that terrorism is not against the teachings of Islam. In fact, terrorists and its advocates refer specifically to the teachings of the Koran and the Hadith!

Having said that, I fully realize that the majority of Muslims does not adhere to these teachings, but a significant minority does...

Have you read the Koran? Have you read the Hadith, or at least parts of it? Have you read, for example, Muslim scholars such as Sayeed Qutb?

Generalizations, are a bad idea, generally speaking.
Betty,
It was another famous sage, Samuel Langhorn Clemens (I think I spelled it right.) the man that the world knows as Mark Twain, who once said, "There was never a generalization that was worth a DAMN, including this one!"
We do tend to lump everyone and everything, into a number of categories, and mentally wash our hands of giving further thought about mind staggering numbers of differences, that defy categorizing, because we are too busy, or more likely, just mentally lazy.
Everybody generalizes, so nobody should smugly feel superior to anyone else, regarding this specific human trait. We ought to fight the tendency, though.
