I think those maps are fairly accurate in the cities, but out in the country - forget it.
The other day, as I was driving in the country, the little icon on my GPS representing my car, which is usually moving along whatever road I am on, was happily zipping through the woods...

Most of the time I find them on track, but I have had trouble a time or two--even here in the city.
