I like when Dr, Phil (yes, I confess I’m a fan) asks a couple who are in marital trouble “Do you get up every morning and ask yourself how can I make his/her day a little better?” If we did ask ourselves that question and then actually acted on it, marriages would be nothing short of nurturing. So I agree that we should be thinking what we can put into a relationship rather than what we can get out of it. It’s so simple really- we reap what we sow.
