Disorientation.

  Vogue,

The disorientation about which you spoke, was a result of awakening in a darkened, unfamiliar room. The first and only time that I traveled to a distant foreign country, Yucatan, back in 1970, my disorentation was profound and complete, as I couldn't speak or understand the language, the culture was completely foreign to me and I stuck out like a sore thumb among the native Mexican people. Food tasted different, choices of what was available, was completely different, too. Refrigeration was all but nonexistant. If one wanted and could afford to buy meat, you had to rise before daybreak and find the meat truck before it left with the rising of the sun. If you bought honey or mayonaise, it was necessary to take your own jar with you to the small store where foodstuffs were sold. The villiage dump, contained only bones, turtle shells, broken glass and paper, no cans, jars, etc. as nothing that could possibly be reused was ever thrown away. The small shoreline village, (Progresso) had no telephones, only two televisions, and televised boxing matches, were attended by most of the residents, who enthusiastically and boisterously cheered on their favorite boxer, after paying a small fee (I think it was less than a penny!) to be allowed the watch and occupy a folding metal chair during the evening festivities. Talk about culture shock! Air-conditioning was only a rumor, furniture as we know it did not exist as the humidity would rot anything that we use here in the states, hammoks were the only way one could take a non-vertical position. Windows, and screens were not used, doors were rare and the roofs were thatched. A two room house, living room/bedroom combo, and kitchen w/stove, detatched bathroom w/shower (running water!!!) rented for $36.00 dollars per month, double the regular price because it was the hot season and the only comparatively cool breeses were along the shoreline. I was happy to return home, but I find that I often think about the nearly two month stay, fondly. It was an adventure and we were befriended by some very friendly and hospitable people, saw many Mayan ruins, were taken fishing each day, taught to dip small shrimp, night hunt for fox, atop an old Suburban wearing head mounted lights,........ yes it was quite an adventure. I am certain that the villiage that I visited in 1970 has changed completely by now, but perhaps it has not. I'll never know.

I do understand perfectly well what you mean: it seems that I woke up everyone rather early the first morning I was here because I had to open all the cupboards to find a cup for my coffee!LOL

As long as you can find your computer you must be OK. Hope you enjoyed your swim. With the temperatures we are enjoying in Europe now, the water is the best place to be.

You are amazing my friend... I don't know how you do it... keeping two homes and traveling back and forth... to two such different places, cultures, climates, even time zones  loll  I am surprised you are functioning as well as you are!!!!  Maybe the harder time you are experiencing getting use to the change this time is a sign that you are leaning towards the US as a more "home" situation... but that is probably me just  kepping my hopes up  loll...  Galicia is a beautiful place as well... more similar  to Germany and the States... I am sure you will love it there if there is where you end up :-)  Take care of you xoxoxo
