There are several outfits like StatsInc. that specialize in all sorts of sports statistics including situation stats.  I have to admit that I'm not that sold on all of the situational stats for a couple of reasons.  One is that almost everyone is using them now which means, like flipping a coin, you're just as likely to make a right move going against the statistical tendency as you are going with it.  I liken it to a great poker player who knows and plays the odds, but also knows to play his opponents by making himself just unpredicatable enough that he is difficult to beat even when he is having a bad run of cards.  My other problem is that with every team playing 17 to 20 different opponents during the season, it seems to me the situational stats for opposing teams are based on to small a sample to be significant.  Its not like the old days when a team played each time in its league 22 times.  With that much annual experience with each team, situational stats would have actually meant something.

I didn't know there was so much to know.
I'll admit I am a fairweather Mariners fan.  I listen (or watch occasionally) when they are doing well.  One thing I have noticed and wondered about is all the "situation statistics" .  Is there someone on a computer with a giant database that gives the announcers these stats?  Are the stats a result of having long stretches of time to fill (for the announcers that is)?  Interesting.
