Taking a break from your studies was probably the most sensible course of action. Being depressed is a full-time 'job' in itself; having experienced it myself I remember how difficult it was to concentrate on anything or even remember the simplest things.

Glad to know that you find writing is therapeutic; that's my experience too.

Keep going and do what you feel helps you best to get back on the road to where you want to go to in the end.
