Give it another try! Otter was your age when he first put on a pair of rollerblades. Yes, he was awful! But now he's on a speed skating team!
I suggest taking lessons in an indoor rink. WEAR WRIST GUARDS! Sure, you'll feel like a dork starting in a class with little kids, but you will progress much faster than they will. Or maybe your rink has beginner classes for adults.
You know, I think some parks n' rec programs have intro to blading classes aimed at adults.
Skating is a good cross-training sport for running. It's easier on your joints, and it uses different muscles.

I feel your pain!
I remember trying to roller skate at a rink years ago with an old girlfriend. They had a deejay and it looked like a scene out of "Roller Boogie". However, I mostly found myself picking myself off the floor. I tried roller blading a few years ago, but I just couldn't do it. I thought it would be a great enhancement to my running, but alas, it never came to pass!
