Don't forget that this happened over forty years ago
That helps make things more distant and gives one the ability to recall without too much rancour because the school teacher is now dead and I understand my parents' relationship in light of both their personalities and I am removed from it psychologically and therefore able to dissect it and analyze it without too much emotion. I have grown up in other words and see the events from a more mature perspective and understand that my mother is still a very childish and spoilt person.

Oh God.. how do you write so clearly and without rancour?  Very, very good, I'll read again.

Wow - Nor - prisoners are treated better than you were as kids.  The challenge is to not pass it down to the next generation.  My husband's mother was just as abusive and sadistic.  She'd chase the kids around with butcher knives.  When Jeff was 12, his Mom went to slap him and as he stopped her hand he said, "If you touch me, I will hit you back." She never touched him again.  He still has that inner strength - and has never laid a hand on our own children.
