Just catching up here - sorry about the knee. I truly commiserate, being not entirely free of knee problems myself...

Re: TAPS & metalrat,
That is good to know about sodas even though I am not a soda drinker.  I might need to pass the info on to someone else.  I'm basically a coffee, tea, water person.  Which reminds me, I need to go make another pot.

TAPS & metalrat,

something that eliminated general knee-creakiness for me, was the elimination of diet soda from my list of potables.  The difference it made was amazing, and practically overnight.  Regular soda left the list for other reasons, and now I drink a lot more water, often flavored with a squeeze of lemon or lime, or with teas or herbal brews.

I have not tried the gluc/condroitin but my husband whose knees are due for replacement devours them daily.

My knee right knee acts up at random times...
...sometimes when I stoop down and try to stand back up, or climbing the stairs, and usually in the form of a sharp pain that feels like a large needle being jammed into my knee cap.

I am a believer in Glucosamine with Condroitin ie:  Flex-a-min and other brands.  Several years back when I was still working as a nurse I had a bout of knee pain that drove me nuts for about a year until I started taking it.  It took a month for the necessary amount to build up and then the pain stopped over night.  I continued taking it until all that I had were used up and then I stopped.  But, I do keep it on hand and take a dose now and then at the least twinge.
