Whew! That's a relief. I thought you saw something really icky or at least something I'm not aware of. I describe women as I see them and I realize, though I'm often reluctant to admit it, at times I'm sexist, chauvinistic, and harbor lecherous thoughts. Though those things can be icky, I rationalize it by believing I score points because I'm not the worst offender out there. It's quite ridiculous, actually, like driving ten miles over the speed limit isn't really speeding because someone else is doing twenty over. Most of the time, it works.

How do I put this delicately? I guess by prefacing it with what I mean: no criticism. Some of your descriptions of women border on sexist, chauvinist or lecherous. I actually find it refreshing (in a creepy way) that you don't shy away from seeing and describing women as sexual (descriptions of the waitress a few posts back, as well as the Jehovah come to mind immediately) instead of glancing over their looks. Lord know women (who me?) are no better, if slightly more languorous in our descriptions of men as eye candy.

There you go again reminding me I'm not as smart as I think I am. I know who Updike and Mailer are, but I'm not that familiar with their work/style. I'm not being defensive (or trying to put you on the spot), but what is it about the way I describe women? I'm just curious.

It was a joke - probably more funny in my head. Your descriptions of women sometimes creep me out in a Updike/Mailer-esque sort of way. So I guess we're even

Maybe Queen V has the right idea. Just ignore them until they go away.

Thanks. I try to keep it light-hearted as much as I can. Readers can only take so much angst.

Flashing the JW! I never thought of that.
I have come to the door in a bathrobe, sniffling and hacking, "this isn't a good time" -- none of that stopped them. Then I started with the questions and pointing out their ridiculous arguments with mock sincerity. Eventually I scared one of 'em off by asking if she weren't afraid my questions might plant little seeds of doubt. I love your description of the unexpected callers...
