I kept a journal during my college years, now about twenty years ago. I amassed close to three thousand hand-written pages kept in several three-ring binders. I still have them, stored safely in an old milk crate in the back of the closet. I dig them out (when my wife isn't around) and read at random. It's strange. I'm simultaneously amazed by how much I haven't changed and startled by how much I have.

Re:
Oh, man - that is just so horrible. I guess your friend was not also the friend you though. I would be so heartbroken. I'm sure you have felt as I have on many occassions, "If only..." but there just isn't an if. I hope that you have had the courage to start new journals. Thank you for sharing.

I have kept journals since I learned to write. My life, a new journal for each year, was stored in a cardboard box in my city apartment. When I found a job outside of the city, a friend of mine took over the lease. Because I would be doing the room & board thing during the job stint, I left all my extra clothes, boxes, etc., at the apartment. The friend had words with the landlord, and just up and took off, not bothering to contact and warn me. Six months later, I returned to find that the landlord has shipped all my stuff to the dump. He needed to rent the place, so had emptied the apartment. My journals, poems, writing, pictures were gone forever. I was devastated! I sincerely hope you find yours....

How terrible to lose your journal! I am happy you have started again! It will be the best one yet I believe! sam
