Functional illiteracy
Mandalee,
The other day, I was shocked to learn that on average, one out of each SEVEN American adults, is functionally illiterate! To add insult to injury, the GOP insisted that educational funding be cut from the financial stimulus package, calling it pork! I dislike both political parties, but the shortsighted hacks in the Republican Party should be ashamed to slither outside, while it is still light outside.

You have stated the problem well. Yet, it may be difficult to abate this problem as easily as you say. Many adults are not willing to let others know they cannot read, and hence do not avail themselves of the help that is accessible. How may we overcome that fear?

I really enjoyed the post, having been a teacher for two decades! Thanks for stopping by; apologies for not acknowledging the calling cards [lovely ones!] due to my sheer ignorance, and not clicking on the link! Blessings. Nita.

I agree. Trying to implement anything though is a problem when you throw politicians in there.

Good writing, MandaLee. Learning to read is like a miracle to an adult that has always been illiterate.
