mordent - probably moreso an extension of man's imagination but ego as well
We can only assume what it was like for our primitive ancestors to attempt explanations for the universe and the spacial bodies observable without aid of telescope. Then to contemplate how we came to be and the meaning of our existence from this same position of relative ignorance, renders these ancient constructs as almost predictable. It should be no surprise that we ended up with a paternal God created in man's image.

My faith practices tolerance and I buy into it wholeheartedly! I would  never assume that what works for me would work for someone else! sam

Perhaps God is merely an extension of mans ego. Projected into the sky so as to give him more power and justify his cause for starting wars/killing others.

hardilaziz - tolerance is a practical necessity and no one could argue the

notion of accepting that we are all equals as a ground rule.

That is simply how it should and must be but the reality is often quite different. Inequity is the single biggest issue faced by those who are not proponents of the big guy in the sky. When people suggest that I must be tolerant, I agree, it is necessary for a workable society, when people suggest that I must respect the beliefs of others however, my reply is always the same: "You first"

Instead of trying to convert others to our way of thinking we should be more tolerant and have healthy respect for others' beliefs. I have no issues as long as people dont use offensive language to denigrate others or engage in a game of one-upmanship. We are equals, let's accept it as a ground rule.
