I am enthralled!
This is beautifully written - a rich tapestry of language and thought, with important allusions...and it does bring back memories of my own visit to Wimbledon years ago, although I saw it then mainly as the Mecca of tennis...

I thought this was well written too. So warm and descriptive. It was a breath of fresh air. But on the other note it is so sad to see so many lives taken needlessly! It pains me so! sam

Re: auslander
thankyou  i hope it all settles fast- the rescue forces are doing a commendable job. as for the weather, believe it or not, i'm in my london woollies since y'day, here in bangalore- it's so rainy and unexpectedly cold for these parts   but I bet your walk was not so bad afterall

Re: Re: metalrat:

yes, i am now in India, and watching every minute of the exemplary rescue operations  . Africa... well, i guess, we'd need a dedicated channel to discuss issues from there- its sad that the world is so relentlessly imbalanced!

thankyou for your wishes. hopefully my next post will be in a lighter vein . i'll see you around though.

Very well written. I've never been in this area but I could feel it through your writing. As for India, I'm afraid it's just the beginning, or continuation, of what's going on around the world with fanatism; when you think that you possess the truth and the only truth, everyone else must be wrong. And thanks for your comment; I dressed well and went for a walk with the dog in the snow covered fields.

I gather from your response that you are now in India? You must also be on tenterhooks.

You are so right, the western media don't get concerned unless westerners are in peril.
I posted a response on blogit several months ago about the horrors perpetrated on a daily basis in Africa, which go relatively unreported in the western media.

Thank you and be careful in your travels!!

malcom: You have turned out to be a neighbour of sorts  . inspite of its current cosmopolitan profile, Wimbledon is in principle a quaint and quiet English suburb, and this temple came as a complete surprise. if you are curious, and you get the chance, i would urge you to walk in. The people in there are very welcoming.

metalrat:

i am thankful for your appreciation of this piece and the message i strive to convey through it.

what drove to me to such emotion was the world's reaction to what is keeping india on tenter hooks today. a similarly lethal string of blasts rocked all of India barely months ago.  i was in london for a few days during that period and saw that not much more than cursory mentions were made in the western media.  western businesses had their interests rooted as much then as now here in India, and yet, a shake-up like that was a mere piece of information. now that our nationals have been taken hostage (their plights still unknown), the governments of the world are swarming in their concern and actually want to get involved at a personal level. i couldn't help but wonder at how someone close to us has to be hurt, for us to be moved thus. to a point, even i am guilty of that, but hopefully, i've woken up.

thankyou very much for your kind comments :)

and as you can see, British or American, we do have a lot to be thankful for. happy thanksgiving to you and thankyou for wishing me the same

I used to live
near Wimbledon, in Collier's Wood, and good to hear there is some peace and tranquility among the mayhem and the apathy you so eloquently write about

No, you are quite something!
This is an amazing portrait of the growing multi-ethnicity of Europe and Great Britain, not unlike the historic immigrant influence on the Unted States. Only now, here, as well as in England, the immigrants are increasingly from more exotic lands, with more diverse belief systems and therefore the contrast is even greater.
I'm impressed with your understanding and acceptance of the Hindu way of tranquility in the midst of the frenetic hustle and bustle of Western Culture.
And yes, it is ironic, a culture that was traditionally prejudiced against other ways of thinking, becoming a place of refuge for peoples that were once under its heel.
The Mumbai massacre is stunningly tragic, and it is good that the West has opened its arms to those seeking refuge, in spite of our cultural differences.
This is an amazing write and you are an excellent writer.
By the way, I wished you Happy Thanksgiving on my blog, not knowing until I read this post, that you were British. Please pardon my faux pas.
