Corbin

An interesting debate. Whether one agrees with mousehop or not, he does represent an important segment of American society, thoughtful, obviously well educated and articulate. Which means that, in one way or another, he belongs to a category of people who help shape public opinion. (Not as much as a member of the mass media, but still...)

Being socially liberal and fiscally conservative is living in a kind of halfway house. As a 'real' conservative, I am willing to make friends even with the occupants of halfway houses, who are often very nice people. But if they are socially liberal, I am always highly suspicious of them, since their liberalism tends to mask a deep love of social engineering and a strong totalitarian impulse...

Just be patient! The "I told you so's" will be coming for the likes of you and your son. Too bad that people make huge mistakes and never learn from them but there is hope that you two will change your voting preferences by 2012! I have a feeling that many will regret their vote. BUT NOT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is your ballgame now totally! Don't screw it up, even though you will in a big way.

Re: Re: You have an odd memory
I don't agree with your conclusion that the election would have been worse with another choice for running mate.  McCain had strong appeal to independents and some conservative Democrats on his own, but lost it by choosing a Social Conservative with otherwise weak credentials.  Like many others, I was, (and am) wary of Obama because of his lack of experience.  Had McCain made a real shift to the right on fiscal matters rather than social, he could have won my vote.  He had my sons vote until he chose Palin.  Rallying the Social Conservatives, and losing everybody else is no way to win elections.

Re: You have an odd memory
The election would have been much worse had she not been on the ticket.....why does it matter about you being impressed?  You would never have voted for the ticket anyway.

We lost because we tried to be like you......there was not a striking difference between the candidates positions...both supported the now obvious sham of a bailout....both had same positions on immigration......blah...blah...blah

Under those circumstances would you pick a Don Rickles lookalike or the Pied Piper???  The free koolaid won out.......we have to look to the future and it certainly doesn't involve advice from you and your ilk......that's part of what got us where we are now.

You have an odd memory
Um, according to polls, Palin lost McCain support because of her social conservatism, which rallied social conservatives but alienated independents, moderates, and libertarians.  And the more she spoke, the less impressed many of us were (and that's still happening).  As for the new liberal government, it won't be much change after rapidly growing government, increasing socializing of society, and a burgeoning debt burden.  A tax increase will do more to slow the growth of government than any recent Republican has done.

Good point.
At least with the election of a liberal, we don't have to deal with relentless, foaming at the mouth temper tantrums and psychotic, raving hatred if the left had lost. Just check your guns and ammo, I've got a feeling they'll be coming for it soon.

And John McDonalds is garbage.
