Hmmm, I agree with much of what you say in your post, but I think you overlooked one thing we have and one thing we need.  About what we also have: In addition to the power to reason , G-d (or whatever force we have to thank for being here,  be it Nature, chance, evolution or whatever you want to call It,)  also gave us an unbelievably complex and efficient body, with an immune system that is able to keep us alive by allowing us to fight any foreign invasion to our system.  That body,  coupled with our mind or reasoning power is what has made us masters of our environments so far.  It is the belief that we are godlike, that we can use and misuse all the resources that are around us and abuse all other forms of life out there that has brought us to the pickle that we are in now. About what we also need: In order to be complete and well adjusted, ( and this is my opinion now) we as human beings need a belief that there is something more to us than what we presently are, a sense of continuation... again whatever you want to call it it does not matter, heaven ... Nirvana... reincarnation,  or just recycled energy... the point is we as humans need to know that we are not all there is that we are not all matter,  for if we were then what about our thoughts... our hopes and dreams... pure chemical reactions?  I think not.  We need to know  that our Destiny...is more than just  to become worm food.  Descartes was right, " We think and therefore we are"  but we are what?  I will shut up now :-)  Excellent thought provoking post!!!

We need to know and appreciate that we are all a child of God (or call it “Universe” if that’s a more comfortable term) and as such we have the responsibility to live our lives as best we can and to love and respect others around us.  All the religious “books” may provide us with some guidelines but ultimately it comes down to a more visceral motivation to do the right thing; to love, be loved, and spread the love.

All peoples are equal and should live in harmony as this line of yours suggests: All we need to know is to love the very next person. Wouldn't this be most glorious! sam
