Don't you think, Ifyou-Please, that you are fortunate...
..to live in the one country to which all the other people are trying to come? This is a vital point all the "blame-America-firsters" simply don't get. You name it, no matter what it is, it probably is better here, so people come here to live. They stand in line. They come legally. They come illegally. They walk, swim, crawl, and fly...but they come, because HERE is better than anywhere else!

I don't think I would want to move to a foreign country unless I preferred
their culture to my original.

OK Argee
Fair enough. I take exception when anything implying discrimination is linked to my name

I understand, Belle...
...I was just making a wry comment about the ACLU.

What does it have to do with age discrimination?
It is just about planning for how many people will be around at any given time to do the jobs and recognising that some places have an over-supply of capable and willing workers ans entrepreneurial people who can generate wealth

Interesting thought, Bell.

I wonder what the ACLU would say about your "implied" age discrimination?

Thank you, EB, for your illuminating comment.

You reinforce my feeling that what the American Muslim population really needs is a bit of common sense education. Clearly, it is not giving in to intimidation to adapt to the customs of one's host country. When I was a boy in Switzerland in 1950, I WANTED to wear Knicker trousers like the other guys. My jeans simply didn't make it for me. It wasn't so much that I wanted to blend in (although that was an element), as that I wanted to be part of what I saw. I suspect that for the people who are so tradition bound in their atire, an appropriate Fatwa issued by leading Imams would go a long way towards solving the problem. In any case, it can't hurt.

Are you aware that I have been posting on another Blog, ISLAMIST VIOLENCE, about world-wide terror under the (mostly) Wahhabi banner? When you review this material, PLEASE remember this current blog in immigration and my comments here. I fear that unless Islam changes as the Catholic Church finally changed in the late 1800s, so that it finally and forever eshews violence, that we are headed towards a world-wide Jihad that can only have the mose dire consequences for Islam and practicing Muslims everywhere. I will be posting another article to this Blog later today, an article that is scheduled for publication on Monday in DefenseWatch Magazine. I will be very interested in your response. I will be putting your blog list into my favorites in order to keep track of your material.

A simple examination of demographics would reveal which countries should be
welcoming immigrants and which need to allow young people to find their fortune elsewhere

Or more simply put. Countries with lots of old people should welcome immigrants from countries with young people.

But sadly this argument is overlooked by many amid the racism and a clinging onto imperialistic ideals.

The solution is not so simple.

I like your notions of inclusion and your devotion to America's ideals.  I have worked with immigrants from the Islamic world and I know them to be largely honest, humble, smart, and well intentioned people.  They come to America because they want the ability to say what they will, do what they wish, and become what they want to become.  I was born into Islam but am all over the place on that issue.  I do not actively practice the faith.  However, I know that the Fatwa is controversial even to the most devout Muslim.

After the passing of the Prophet Mohammed, the faith splintered.  Islam has no real leadership structure.  This is especially so in the Sunni Muslim world which encompasses the majority of the world's Muslims.  Shiites have a leadership structure which is more likely to be respected.  The Shia are found in Iran and are the majority in Iraq.  However, leadership structure or not, I dare say that Fatwas only tend to be followed by those who agree with them in the first instance.

In the aftermath of 9/11, there was a great deal of fear amongst Muslims, particularly women because they cover their hair.  I am of the opinion, rationally and religiously, that these women do so as a matter of choice, not of compulsion.  My mother only covers her hair during prayer.  My sister who rejected Islamic practice way back, never covered her hair.  But many women do cover their hair and many men, largely Asian Sub-Continent Muslims, wear traditional Islamic outfits.  They have that right as Americans or people living under American law.

I counseled them to not dress "Islamicly" under the circumstances, but they felt strongly that they not give in to intimidation and prejudice.  Even some Imams, although not many, counseled the same and were similarly ignored.  Minds should be broadened to understand, as you seem to understand, that the clothes make little difference.

Nice post.  Thank you.

El

PS: Don't let irrational comments bother you.  It's another sad byproduct of an open forum.

I don't question your perspective, SL...
...but things are quite different in your country. England is small, and the mindset is not very accepting of immigration. The United States, on the other hand, was populated by immigrants, and has a long tradition of accepting immigrants with open arms. My post was countering the opinions of those over here who have decided that immigration should no longer be part of our national psyche. I believe it is one of our strengths.

Bring on the immigrants?  That makes me sick.  Do you have any idea what it's like in Britian now?  The Englishmen is fast becoming a foreigner in his own country.  Is that a good thing?

I don't understand your comment.

Particularly when it comes to hispanics.
How would you like it if a foreign power came and took over your city and said that any of your people outside the city limits are forbidden to move there?
