Sira890,
Very well stated! Politicians have made, are making, and will continue to make speeches! There are few worth remembering or revisiting.

Corbin Dallas,
Again, you have searched the bowels of history and brought it to our attention that we are "worst off" today than when Jimmy Carter left office! Thirty years of illusions and a future baren of reality! It is the Constitution my friend that is most in peril by an Imperial President. And I do not hear either candidate looking to reverse that paradigm.

I wouldn't expect originality from a politician. Keep in mind, he's not the one creating those gems. There is, no doubt, some puffed up speech writer, probably a guy in his late 20's or early 30's, who stumbled across that little piece of history.

He was likely too young to remember the time that those words were actually spoken, but he realized they were A) well written, and B) effective. So he decided to use them, with a few tweaks and modernization, of course. After all, it's been 20 years--who's going to connect the dots?

But there are generations of people who do remember those times, and can make the connection.

I bet, if you went back another 20 or 30 years, or even into the time of the depression, you'd find some similar words being thrown around. The issues haven't changed much--why would the speeches?

You write: "It demonstrates a lack of original thought".

You mean.......kinda like "Ask not what your country can do for you.........Ask what you can do for your country?

"Are you a politician asking what your country can do for you or a zealous one asking what you can do for your country?"

Kahlil Gibran

They ALL do it. Of course it's not "original". Find me something that IS.

Uhhhh.....
It's the same Politician, Mario Cuomo, speaking at the Dem Convention in 1984.  It demonstrates a lack of original thought or a very lazy speech writer.......

But this is just a small thing, now with the Obama connections to the Sub Prime panderers of pardon thugs, it's going to be a much more fertile area........
