Very interesting. However, I would not call it a
re-emergence, which implies that it once existed, but the emergence of a rather new phenomenon. The 'public' has never been really active in
meaningful public debate, other than possibly in the early days of Athenian democracy...

I am not so sure that is what is actually happening! There is still the glaring evidence of "big money"! I still have no evidence that these politicians are prepared to represent the "public trust" as the humble trustees that our Constitution mandates! How many have actually read and understand this great document?
