Thanks Norwood. I appreciate the supportive advice. Sorry to hear about the dramas in the world of education.

Thanks for the comments guys. I have thanked LLM for her kind words. Melody you sure are right about what a huge hurdle leaving the old business was. Leaving any other scenario should be pretty easy in comparison .. its kind of strange that I have nevertheless endured a less than satisfactory job for such a long time. It's something I've been reflecting on these past days... probably its been about opting for familiarity and security (and the positive feedback from former good quality bosses who saw me as dependable and I guess I liked the way that made me feel)... I guess only an arsehole was going to cause me to get around to getting out of the rut!

In my eyes, you experienced and surpassed the largest hurdle when it comes to a change in  career, profession, service or vocation (whatever the proper name for services rendered by a priest) when you left the priesthood.  Be not afraid of the new challenges ahead  even if  they are  transitory stepping stones and not the ideal position you seek.   Keep acting on your creative ideas and move forward to make a positive difference in the world as you are doing for us (LLM and Me especially).   Melody

Rob,

I feel for you, though to be honest I can't say I relate in any way...I don't.  I think it would benefit you to take on a job in which you get to help people, but in your own way and on your own terms.

You're a good person, and I think that if you stay at at this job much longer it'll take that away from your soul...at least somewhat.  I don't mean to say you'd turn into some sort of Frankenstein, far from that...just that maybe you'd be a lot angrier.

Nonetheless, you ARE a good person.  You obviously have a great deal of compassion for people, and I think you should focus on using that.  I'm honoured to call you a friend.

In the meantime, yes, do focus on your novel.  Living in a state of constant reality gets to be a bloody drag after a while, and allowing yourself to drift to another place can indeed be a blessed release.

Go for a run, read a good book...spend time with your new lady.  All will come together in time.

Hey, Roommie just reminded me of something, and it made me think I'd like to pop a short note in the post to you...okay?

Keep yourself well Rob.  Don't let the bastard bugger you up too much... Big Hug

Sorry that should be your power miniscule
compared to theirs!

Don't know what sort of job you are doing

But I had a principal at a school that fancied him self a bit of a scribe (disjointed meanderings in the fortnightly newsletters) who could not stand a bar of me because I somehow threatened the status quo at the school. It sapped the joy out of a job that I really loved with a passion and I ended up in Victoria again where I have friends writing from rage and anger at the situation that exists in some NSW schools where there are some insular, ignorant little despots holding court in the staff rooms.

I was called many things both to my face and behind my back  but you know what I don't give a flying wombat for people that can't stand admitting that you might be better at something and know what you are on about more, despite the fact your salary is half theirs and your power miniscule in the system compared to yours. These sorts of people have to make it look like 'YOU are the person at FAULT!' 'cause mate their impoverished egos cannot stand the fact that they are the ones who have the problem. They are such small insecure little people that they must set someone else up.

My advice to you - let off steam and work on your novel, but be patient with these idiots and remember they are only idiots. Anyoen who is more articulate or competent than they are makes them feel bad and they then get set to bear down on you for daring to be better.

Think positive and stay on top of things emotionally. Don't let them get you down!
