Re: To ZenMom

does your writing talent come naturally or did you study english/literature/creative writing, etc. in college?

First off, thanks for the compliment!  I feel the same way about your writing- you seem naturally talented.  My route to writing was wayward; I was a Psych major/ journalism minor in college.  Got my MA in psychology, then chucked it all to become a stockbroker for nearly 20 years (I was also good with numbers - and considered being a math major, too).  After having kid #1, though, I wanted to raise him myself and not rely on a nanny forever, so I started writing for magazines and never looked back.  I write travel pieces and profiles for publications like Northeast Boating, Westchester (NY) Magazine, Paddler, Sierra and Newsday, in addition to a Religion column in my city newspaper - but bloggit gives me a different, more immediate outlet for a more serendipitous style of writing.  And aside from Dave - most here seem open and friendly and willing to give other voices a shot.  Plus, it's good fodder for my magazine and newspaper articles!!!

You should write about your home birth.  Was it planned or an "uh-oh - I won't be able to make it to the hospital in time" kind of thing?  Too bad about your daughter's father, but unfortunately, that's not a rare story.  I hear that kind of thing all the time.  Does your daughter have a relationship with him at least?

Mal, I just love reading/hearing birth stories. Although many say this is a man's world......I wouldn't change places w/ any man on earth. I love being a woman and a Mother. And, like you, the births of my children were the high points of my life thus far. (Even if my M/A blog  suggests "other" highlights. lol) I keep meaning to write about my daughter's birth. She was born at home. I'll never forget it......it's just a shame that those memories also cause such sadness, since I haven't spoken to her Father in 10 years (and, he lives in the same town as I do.) BTW.....you really are a good storyteller...does your writing talent come naturally or did you study english/literature/creative writing, etc. in college?

Oh damn!  You make me feel better about having had  a total hysterectomy at 33. This was hilarious!

this is great! I love your description of the
epidural ... you could have stuck pins under my nails at that point -- would not have cared!

I just love this piece. Finally an account of what it really  is like, without all the sickening sugar coating you hear tearful moms spout. You may hate birth but in the end you love the little bu....ers anyway and forever.
