Re: Hi gapcohen
Norwood- Thanks for your comments.  I figured I threw as much information about Kohains as I should in this particualar post, since I was linking it to the Popes (past and present) for a relative viewpoint.  I write a column for the religion section of my city newspaper, and my city of 120,000 has only 12,000 Jews - in other words, many of my readers are from the other 90% of non-Jews.  So, I try to make my essays clear, educational and relavant to all. And for ZenMom and Taps and my "favorites" - who are not of our backround, it's important to lay the foundation of information slowly, to unravel what is to most people in the world a mysterious way of life! Thanks for adding things I might have missed, though!

Hi gapcohen

great post on the role of the Cohenim. Though some people may not know what the Beit Hamikdash is or that there are three tribes in the Jewish nation - The Cohenim or the priesthood status which is passed down through the father as is the Leviim or the servants of the Cohenim and the singers in the Beit Hamikdash and lastly but not least the Israelites.

Cohens have a great responsibility and many restrictions especially if they wish to preserve their cohuna status they must not marry a non jewess and they are not allowed to enter a cemetry which is why most cohenim are buried on the edge of the graves closest to the wall.

To Taps

I'm so glad you are giving us this opportunity to learn more about the Jewish religion and culture

So happy to do it, and I think it's necessary to demystify these things.

As a Catholic whose entire formation was under the pontificate of JPII,
You can't imagine how much I appreciate this post.  I have his Crossing The Threshold Of Hope, his call to true unity among all the faiths.  I believe that all Catholics need to examine his life and try to emulate him in his love, humility and true contrition.  I, too, am hopeful in this Benedict XVI.
