submission by overt and subtle government threat or are directly complicit in being their public relations outlet...

The news media have become...

...the mouthpiece for the government and for corporate abuse. What criticism you do hear, is so mild, compared to the gold-ol'-days, when Sam Donaldson was noted for his attitude of, "Now, see here, Mr. President!" No one holds anybody's feet to the fire anymore. The current state of the American media is appalling! Great post!
