Half of my family was back pew presbyterian descended from russian jew. The other half, Snake-Handlers. I know a good deal about true faith, and true charity, and how to be good to someone with just a look, and not having to give an Armani-suited pimp 10% of my hard earned money so he can tell me what to think. I appreciate comments like yours, that speak to the true nature of what we are brought into this world to do in community.

What Evangelism is Supposed to Be and What These People are Doing

are two completely different things. Much of my religious background was from my mom's side of the family and a little evangelical denomination called "The Salvation Army". Yes, Salvationists are a denomination, not just a soup kitchen or a thrift store. They are an offshoot of the Methodists, who are themselves an offshoot of the Anglicans/Episopalians. Evangelism is literally spreading the message of the Good News of Christ. That Good News is the freeing of each of us from morality -- not the imposition of another -- with forgiveness and love. Which is precisely what the Salvation Army does, spreading that message by word and works.

These folks claiming to be or to be leading evangelicals seem awfully preoccupied with moralistic power trips similar to what tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden. I would hesitate to even call them Christian, let alone evangelical. They have certainly created a great deal of frustration for parishes trying to expand their own real evangelistic efforts without being associated with the very visible damage to the Church and its reputation made by people who have co-opted the name "evangelical".
