Whysper - that does sound like a user side security setting
As you get started with your new Wordpress blog you will want to do a couple of important things right at the beginning. Number one on the list is setting up search engine friendly URLs in the dashboard. Very easy to do and important to do at the beginning. I can explain it step by step but prefer to do so in my forum because this type of thing makes good forum content.

I'm not sure if the site is funky or it's just me
everywhere I click leads to the same page that that link takes me to. Could be my work network, they have so much security, even my lint has to log in when I get here.

Again Thanks
I've spent twenty years as a business programmer on midframes(as400), and I know so little about this internet and pc stuff, but I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
Thanks

Whysper - let us look at your questions individually
Issue 1: " . . . but this opens it with all edit features available"
This is only true for you as the administrator logging in from your own computer which has stored your login cookie. If you were to erase all stored cookies from yoru computer, you would have to log in again. Permissions are set in the Dashboard (Wordpress Control Panel).
Issue 2: " . . . or if I have to unzip them locally and then ftp them to the site."
Yes, you must unzip them locally and then upload them to your Wordpress themes directory. The fortunate aspect of this however is that Wordpress themes are small, typically a dozen files or so and can just as easily be uploaded manually.
You will probably want to install the theme switcher plug in (very easy to do and very useful for theme development) to check it out, go to my Wordpress theme development blog, look in the right comlumn for a heading called "Themes" and click on each one: HERE

Ok, now more questions
How do I create a link on my to the blog without giving up edit rights to the viewer? So far I've only figured out the link that takes them into Wordpress in my web host, but this opens it with all edit features available.
I suppose it gets annoying answering all these simple questions, so is there a tutorial that runs one through all the basics, like installing plugins, setting up users and authorities and what nots.
I downloaded the zip files for some themes I want to practice with but I'm unsure of whether I can download the zip files directly to the web host and unzip them there or if I have to unzip them locally and then ftp them to the site.
I hate to take up so much of your time with all these questions, but I'm just having too much fun to stop. Thanks again for your patience.

Success at last! Thank you so much
There were two problems. The first was the host you pointed out, the second was that I was using the subdirectory I created to move the install files to instead of the empty database I had created.
How exciting, now to have some fun.
Thanks again.

Whysper - I vaguely remember something about that from a forum I installed
on a Yahoo server 8 months ago.
I think it is a case of "localhost" being called something else on the Yahoo webserver and though my memory is vague on this, I think they are the only webserver in the world that uses the word "MySQL" instead (and it is case sensitive to boot).
Another common problem for new installations of this type is the extension that some webservers add to both the data base name and the data base user name. For example; I created a data base on my Goldlynx.com web server named "gome" . . . for an install such as the one you are doing, I would have to enter "gome_goldlynx" in the proper field in the configure.php file.

I really appreciate your help.
I'm getting close to having it installed. I think it's having trouble finding the local host(whoever that is) or I've managed to mangle the config file improperly. I'm comforted by the fact that I see multiple posts of people having the same problem in their forum, so I don't feel so bad.

Whysper - I have been through 3 different web hosting services so far
I believe that a webhosting service using cpanel with Fantastico is the best way to go for a number of reasons. First off, they use a Linux server which offers the most possibilities for PHP based websites utilizing MySql databases. Your Yahoo server has many of the same features but it has two major failing points. They do not support .htaccess files (can be important for security) and their auto install scripts are limited. I also found simply using their interface to be less than intuitive. Hostgator.com seems to be one of the best cpanel resellers. Avoid Windows based web servers. You can learn more about cpanel by following the links:

I had a question and I wasn't sure where to leave it, so here it is
Which web hosting services do you recommend for a novice. I jumped onto the Yahoo bandwagon, but I haven't done a whole lot to it yet. I'm not looking to open a store, more to create a presence on the website to spread my own twisted view of reality on the unsuspecting.
I want to have registration, a few blogs and articles just for starters and evolve it from there.
