This one made me laugh :) I hadn't thought of the hazards of leaving the shopping in the boot when it's freezing. The nearest we've come to this is putting white wine in the freezer and forgetting about it. Sigh. What a waste.

Sira

As soon as i posted that comment, Sira, I slapped my forehead.  How could I possibly have forgotten Canadian Club.   We were discussing this the other day and came to the conclusion that Ireland and Scotland (not England, or Wales) distill whisky because of the perpetual rain and dreich weather.

If it wasn't for the whisky the weather would be unbearable.  I used to drink a lot of single malt whisky but over here - in this area anyway - beer and wine seem to proliferate, and thankfully I've fallen out of the habit

Re: Sira

That's very curious indeed. I rarely see people drinking beer here...maybe it's an Alberta thing!

Yeah, there are a few Canadian whiskies. Canadian Club is probably the most common, but there's a distillery in Nova Scotia that makes a nice single malt--I think it's called Glen Breton Rare.

I don't actually drink the stuff, so I don't know how it compares to good old Scots whiskey, but Mark keeps a bottle around for "medicinal purposes", and he seems to like it.

Even when it's warmed up it feels frozen, Whacky.

Thanks BI.  I'm off to look for the sugar now - it sounds like a great idea.

Sira
Now that does surprise me, Sira.  Every time I see my neighbours they seem to have a bottle of beer in hand - not a whisky to be seen.  Talking about whisky, are there any Canadian whiskies?

You alway's give me such good laughs. It has been really cold here ( WV ) with ice storms. Have a Great Day and add a little sugar and chocolate to that slice of milk.

Oh Mac...

Hasn't anyone told you--beer is a summer drink!

In the Canadian winter, you have to switch to the hard stuff! The higher the alcohol content the better, since it won't freeze up on you (much like the mouthwash, but with a much nicer flavor!). As an added bonus, hard liquor warms you from the inside out--with a belly full of fine single malt scotch, you won't even notice the blistering cold.

If you've just gotta have the beer, go for cans instead of bottles. Otherwise, grab some whiskey, settle in, and wait for spring

Mild summers??   After living in Scotland most of my life, I find the summers here unbelievably hot and the winters excruciatingly cold.

I love heat, and I was puzzled when I first came over here to visit my daughter when she suggested I came over in June because that month was cooler. I didn't understand until I stepped out of the airport into an oven.

But then I didn't expect to become euphoric at a Christmas present of thermal socks.

That sounds cool, BC-A.  I find it quite strange when I have to put frozen milk in a container and place in the refrigerator to warm up.

majroj
Uh!  I'd rather not, majroj.   I'll put it down to experience.   I've heard of beer being used in some recipes but never beer plus a soupcon of glass.  One thing about Nebraska is that you don't need a freezer, just leave it all in the back of the truck.  It must get really cold in Nebraska.

Better still sam, ONLY go to the pool hall.

At least the pork chops didn't spoil in the heat.
You know, I've always admired the hardy Canadians. Maybe even envied the mild summers. But I don't think I'm made for those long, cold winters. If it gets cold enough to freeze beer and crack the bottles, forget it. I put on my wool socks in November as it is.

There's nothing like frozen orange juice. I've had to cut open the carton, drop the chunk of orange ice into the sink. In order to melt it down the drain, I've pour hot water on it.

Filter the beer to take out frags then use for cooking.

I've heard of "cooking sherry", but "cooking beer"??

I kept ice cream in the back of my pickup for about a month? one Thanksgiving in Nebraska.
