Yeah, this is a scam. I've seen it in two other versions now. They get

you to cash their check and you do as they ask, then their check bounces, they get their money and you're screwed.  I'm a tutor and I've seen this one with a nanny and 'visiting' student storyyline.  I've also seen this as a call to help a poor woman's missionary church.  This is the poor man's version of the Nigerian prince scam, or whatever it's called.

I agree with mama joy
When I read this person's email, it did not ring true at all.  I have had many an email from deaf friends, and their emails sound NOTHING like the one you received!  I think your hunch about it being a scam is right on!

I'm wondering about this also.  I have a profoundly deaf sister and brother in law who do use the internet and the special phone.  However, the english in your reply  sounds too good to have come from a very deaf person.  Sign language does not use tenses like we do. There is no ed or ing  endings to their words, nor is there a lot of prepositions such as an, or the. Reading their stuff is difficult.  And why can't they pick it up?   Both my in laws drive.  I think you made a good call.
