little ones and surgery is such a memory searing experience! when my daughter had tubes put in her ears, we insisted that we be allowed in recovery before she awoke, as she'd never woken away from home before. This did not happen and when we finally were brought, she was lying there, so small and so still, with eyes that seemed to swallow her face . . . when she was older she told me it was the first time she was really afraid in her whole life.
your writing revived this memory for me . .
