you are right, it is harsh. I think the ideas is that when the body is gone, it's gone. It allows people to move on, through the various stages of grief, and finally let go.

I am sorry for your friend's death. I understand that cremation is part of Indian customs but to me it feels like a very harsh ending .One second the dead person is here and the next he is not. at least when people are buried you know that there disintegration will take time. not much of a consulation when the spirit is gone, but we tend to hang on to small things at the time of loss.
