TheRevolutionary: As I replied to Corbin, an individual person making $100,000 per year or more is wealthy.  If you can afford to buy a new BMW, God bless you!  Just remember, not everyone is so fortunate!

TheRevolutionary: If you pay into the system, you should get back what you pay into it.  It's as simple as that!

Part of the problem of SS, Wavy, is that they tax it as income. It was
never meant to be taxed.  Add in a nationalized health system and you'll solve most of your SS problems.  Oh, that and eliminate the bleed-off programs, like the Cuban Releif Program [sic] that was enacted to help Cuban refugees from the Batista and Castro days.  I saw a documentary a year or two ago and this little program, though extremely outdated, is still on the books.  I'm certain, like many other government programs, that if the SS Administration was given a good once-over, they'd find all kinds of these little programs.  Eliminate them.  This Sclaes person (the author of the article) is an idiot.

This sort of question requires more than I want to write on someone's comments page. The word Wisdom is all I will leave here.

I have asked this so many times of people complaining about the wealthy....
Surprise me and be different......give me a real answer......

What is a wealthy person?   At what point, dollarwise, does one become wealthy?

WavyDavy:

If the government were to take the SS contributions and invest them, each contributor would be able to get out as much, or more, than he or she paid in. But because the contributions are used by the General Fund no interest is earned on it.

In a society as ours, we are not going to be able not to supplement earnings of the retired unless we are willing to countenance more homeless on the streets. And that has disastrous implications for all of us.

Outsourcing does not negatively affect our economy. All studies conclude the reverse. Prices are lower, goods are more abundant. Service and professional jobs are increased. Think of the growth of UPS et al because of outsourcing of jobs. Think of the increase in maritime activities and the ports.

Senator Obama suggests asking the highest 6 percent  earners to contribute SS on their incomes. We should look at that. Most of them would not object. That would help the fund.

Whether there should be a cost of living increase, that is a decision for the economists and the actuaries. Yet, for some retirees, that's all they have. What if they live 30 or so years after retirement. The check they get would be eroded by the end of their lives. Something has to be done for them.

Social Security is a problem very difficult to solve. Yet it must be.

Stay well; walk good my friend.

Everyone is already SACRIFICING!
If you are gainfully employed, meaning you pay taxes, you are already sacrificing.  The truth is no one working now under the age of about 35 will ever see one penny of the money they give to the social security fund.  As far as I am concerned I'm sacrificing every penny the government takes from me involuntarily for social security.  Do you know any wealthy people personally to make the statement that you see none of them sacrificing anything.  People sacrifice everyday in ways that may not make sense to you, but that doesn't mean that they're not.  The problem isn't outsourcing.  The problem isn't Wal-Mart.  The problem isn't even illegals taking American Jobs.  The problem is everyone one wants a bargain.  I don't care how much money you make, everyone wants the most bang for their buck.  If Americans were willing to step up to the plate and start paying more for goods and services to keep those jobs in house so to speak, then there would be no need to outsource those jobs to other nations for cheaper labor.  There would be no need for a Wal-Mart if everyone stopped shopping there.  It's simple economics.  Quite Frankly, I am sick of sacrificing.  If I can afford a new BMW, I want to be able to buy one.  If I can afford a million dollar home, I want to be able to buy one.  In your fairness concept......is it fair that someone who has only worked for 2 years qualify for social security/disability because they are depressed, or bi-polar, and collect money for the next 40 years when they paid about 2 years?  Most people who pay into social security will never get out of it what they put into it. Until Americans stop wanting something for nothing, the problem will never go away.  As long as Democrats keep using the myth that republicans want to take away old peoples SS checks, to secure votes to keep the insanity going, the problem will never end.  When you say wealthy need to start sacrificing....what your really saying is the government needs to re-distribute money from the wealthy to everyone else.  Thats called socialism my friend, and it has been proven time after time, that it just doesn't work.  THANK GOD.....or whoever you pray to!
