Antonionioni is right, Timerick. And they're just forestalling the
inevitable. Outsourcing jobs, companies moving out of the country, cost of living going up, a deflated dollar, average wages going down, increased free trade agreements, increased industry deregulation, etc., etc. We're going to have to lead the globalization effort to remain economically viable domestically and internationally...

Oh dear, things are looking bad at the moment, but you never know.
I was just watching the Clinton v Bush Sr debate from '92 recently - don't ask! - and the theme of those debates was that America was in a slump and they would bring it out. As we know the economy did improve greatly. Having said that, the fundamental problem was there then and remains today - there aren't enough proper jobs to go round in a market-driven post-industrial economy - the manufacturing jobs are all outsourced and blue collar workers hardly exist any more except in very low-paying jobs.
