The amounts we spend on servicing the debt(interest only) is the hidden cost of today's government. It climbs every year, is not included in the budget and is subtracted from our assets every year.
Merely servicing your loans is just spending money for nothing whatsoever. It's bad enough spending a million for a hammer, but at least you get a hammer. 300 mil for servicing a debt is something nothing and the chicks don't come for free either.

Confessions of a Vast Right Wing Conspirator....
Kingmi: Every presidential candidate should answer each and every question that is posed to them by anyone. If they can't or won't, they shouldn't be running for office.

Re: Short answer..... yes.
Whysper, thanks! BTW our economy is big enough to benefit by the debt.

Short answer..... yes.
Long answer? If the questions seems to absurd for you to address, do you...
A. apologize for the questioners absurdness, and hope they don't get offended?
B. Laugh histerically at the absurdness of it all?
C. Cower in your boots, hoping no one realizes you're not a right wing nut?
Me, I take B. Take your example of raising taxes. In over fifty years I've never really seen them go down, it's as inevitable as my failing hopes for a raise.
The bigger question for me, is....
Are you going to stop spending money we don't have? Deficit spending appears to be the Right Wing answer to raising taxes. The piper has to be paid sooner or later. You can't run a half-trillion dollar war on smoke and mirrors. We run up the national debt, while the Halliburtons rake in record profits. When the smoke goes away we still have the national debt while the Right wing Alfred E. Neumans continue to whistle... what me worry? No new taxes, just new debt.
I think it's funny in a terrifying way.
