Re: OK, Naut. I remember that comet interception...
Pat, the trouble with science fiction is that there's a lot of fiction and little science...

Kabu, nothing shall prevent me from watching you as you come riding in on your broomstick! I shall use all my powers to keep that other thing aloft...

OK, Naut. I remember that comet interception...
In my wishful thinking, science comes up with the technology to beam us up. We all loll around on the good ship USS Enterprise after the hit, wait for things to cool off, and then set about colonizing terra firma all over again.

Ha, this is a conspiracy to keep me from coming over to your part of the
World. I don't know the people who started it and I'm guessing that your promoting it has more to d with that bottle of scotch than anything else but it won't work. Kabu is oiling up that broom stick and packing her little bag. So don't duck for cover just because a comet might fall. Flying broomsticks are much more dangerous to the state of your Nation.

Re: Naut, you do know I'm creating my own biosphere/bunker somewhere

Cringe, that sounds enticing! And thanks for having me on the list! And I'd like to be close to the throne, please! I wonder if there's a way to speed the coming - we'll have to talk to our Christians, maybe a lot of praying will help!

But you gave me an idea - I'm gonna get myself a scotch now...

Hmmmm?
Which will cause the extinction of Canadians.......a comet or your health care system???

Naut, you do know I'm creating my own biosphere/bunker somewhere
where all good people and animals will be able to survive.  I'm thinking of it being kind of a matriarchal polygamist culture, with me as ruler.

Sort of like Noah's Ark but without the water, just lots of scotch.  You're on my list y'know.

I'll keep my eyes peeled to the sky too and if I see it first I'll give ya a shout!

Justi

I haven't seen the show, but I rather doubt that she was speaking of the 'need for a cleansing of the Earth.' What I suspect she might have said is if such an event should occur again, it might set the conditions for a new evolutionary cycle...

But their theory attempts to explain the extinctions that occurred roughly 12,000 years ago...

Re: And, pray tell, what is that technology?
Pat, these things don't come out of the blue (or I should say black, lol). We can observe them (and do) and are really rather good at calculating their paths. We have also achieved a high level of accuracy in intercepting them. You may remember that a couple of years ago we sent a probe to comet Temple 1, took pictures and actually landed a probe on it. And it's not a question of destroying them (we'd still get hit with the debris) but of altering their trajectories very slightly, which over these long distances would be sufficient. Quite possibly with 'sun sails'...

Nautikos
I saw a documentary by this woman and another person. The reasoning behind their theory it appeared was that the earth would need to be cleansed to begin the new step in evolution. I found the whole thing pathetically flawed. But I like your post.

And, pray tell, what is that technology?
Are we mucking around with something powerful enough to deter an asteroid?  And if so, might it backfire?  Perhaps we're looking at the next Great American Extinction... eww.

In this case, I'm glad its you and not me.  HAHAHAHA.  As if the matter of a few miles would make a difference.

Right on with your answer to my question.    I see that while i was doing other things yesterday, you posted again in your travel blog.  I'm off to read it now.
