SCHOOL BOARD, MY LOCAL NEWSPAPER, MY STATE REPRESENTATIVES, AND MY CONGRESSIONAL REPS.  HOW DARE THEY USE TAXPAYER'S MONEY FOR INCULCATION AS OPPOSED TO EDUCATION!! CALL ME OLD-FASHIONED...PLEASE! I AM SHOCKED AND DISMAYED THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAS HAPPENED...COULD HAVE HAPPENED!

It doesn't matter if kids understand base language or not...the point here is the subject matter was completely inappropriate. When will Boulder learn?

Re: Corbin

Base language is what the kids understand.  If you talk about it in a scientific, clinical manner; they won't listen or hear you.  It's uncomfortable to some but that is the way that it is.  Parents have to loosen up and tell them about sex.  Don't hide it from them and pretend that it doesn't exist.  It's a part of life and growing up.

''Have Sex, Do Drugs,'' Speakers Tell Students at Boulder High School.....

Parents should be notified about the contents of assemblies and decide to act according to their values.  I think kids should get all the information regarding sex.  You can't keep them sheltered forever.

Actually, it would probably bother me more
if my fourteen year old daughter was one of the guest speakers....
What's the ancient Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times..."

Seriously, something like that should certainly be brought before parents first.

On the other hand, parents across the country are doing a lousy job, and the reality is, if a school district -- a bureacracy rivaled in sheer useless inefficiency only by the U.S. State Department -- is getting speakers in to do mandatory sessions, then the kids already know all about this stuff, and the barn door's long since opened.

I hate that school districts are having to be baby sitters, penal institutions, and prenatal centers all at the same time. However, I also know that the most successful teen pregnancy campaign in our state, and one of the most effective in the whole damn country, was in a small rural county south of here -- the health department actively put condoms in young girls' hands, blitzkrieged young teenagers with info, maede it easy to get birth control, and guess what? The teen pregnancy rate went down by about 70 percent.

'Tis a weird world we live in; but it's the one we have to deal with.

Sorry about the length of the comment. Good, fun, thought provoking post!

OK, I went back and looked at the transcript. Thank you for pointing it out. I have heard speakers use this attention seeking method of giving what they consider useful information. It always infuriates adults who have the responsibility of raising these adolescents. Surely there is a middle ground to be found that addresses the issues in a more "PC" way. One can make the argument that the message of the dangers of sexual activity are not balanced enough with the popular media's common glorification of sex. One can also make the argument that kids hear messages through language that makes us "adults" uncomfortable. I think the way he is presenting his message dumbs down the student receiving the message personally. Kids look to adults for guidance, they crave the truth in these matters. To put this discussion in such base language only leads to perhaps more confusion. ok.. sorry didn't mean to take over your comment section..this is just a subject near to my heart.

As a parent

I am appalled at this, whatever administrator was responsible for screening this should be drawn and quarterd.

As an adult, I'd have to say it makes pretty good stand up material, these guys are apparently in the wrong business.

I scanned the transcript, haven't got time for a detailed analysis! These guy's aren't educators, they're (poor) 'entertainers' who know what their audience wants to hear. The whole thing is pathetic.

And I am totally unimpressed with the University of Colorado, Boulder. I wrote them a letter about Ward Churchil a while back (and believe me, I wasn't ranting and raving), and never even got an acknowledgment!

.. I give talks to high school students in the course of my work, I cant imagine getting up in front of any group and making such a poorly thought out presentation.   I would be interested to see the entire transcript of his speech.
