It is a difficult addiction. I stopped almost 15 years ago and I am so happy about that. I had tried several times. But one day my husband and I both dropped them and never picked them up again. I had smoked close to 40 years.

Naut...you SHOULD do a post.

Hearing what other people have succeeded with is always a positive.  I would appreciate that post, my dear!

The two things that make me mad about this "Stop Smoking" campaign is that the actual addiction it has created isn't addressed enough AND one too many pocket books are padded by keeping smoking legal so it's going to continue to be a battle for both smokers and non-smokers alike.  Sad, sad, sad!

Masky

I feel for you! We, the reformed smokers, can be the most annoying zealots imaginable, and I include myself! When I quit, cold turkey, it was a struggle at first, but it got easier after a while. And then I replaced that addiction with an addiction to running, which helped, but I understand that's not for everyone...

And I have helped several of my frinds to quit, using a variety of supportive strategies. Maybe I should do a post on that...

proc, thanks for your fulsome praise, lol. It was an experience I would have been glad to miss. However, this weekend will see me in he saddle again, for the first time since the accident...

Naut...
I'm a cigaretteolic!  Yeah, that's it!  Wish people would turn the addictive nature and qualities of cigarettes into more of a promotion than just telling you why it's bad and how it affects people.  Fear induced media helps prevent us from seeing future smokers, but how do we fix those who can't stop or have failed attempts at stopping?

Morning again Naut...geez I hope they never do a study on the ill effects of a wild bike ride..LOL

...or dark chocolate.  Was in the store the other day buying a paper and a lady was buying a pack of cigarettes.  I nearly fainted.  One package was almost $10.00  That's insane!  That's like smoking a dollar bill (even though we don't have them anymore) with every cigarette.  Yikes!

I went back and became completely immersed in a brilliantly written
series of posts on the accident.  Y ou have my sympathy when you talk about it not being your accident but the truck drivers.  You just happened to be there.  I felt the same when my two month old car was smashed so badly at the beginning of March this year by an idiot not stopping at the stopstreet.  Thats why I felt so angry having to put up with that deadbeat courtesy car that was more trouble than it was worth.  It took me two months to get my car back and now the insurance wont cover the excess because the driver who caused the 4 car accident is denying liability.  So while he mucks around we are all caught in limbo and I now have to find money for an accident I didnt cause.  I loved your funny descriptions of the seating at the hospital. Im sure sadists design such uncomfortable seats.  Your waiting lists sound like ours.  As for the Emergency room its good entertainment on a saturday night if you are not too ill.  All the drunks come out to play and their language is colourful to say the least.  Do you ride now ,are you able to run?  Youre so fortunate to be blessed with good health but I think thats what made it harder to accept the incapacitation.  Funny how we take mobility for granted when we are uninjured.  Suddenly the futon is a problem and a simple walk to the bathroom has to be carefully thought out.  It must have been really hard but you write it with a lovely self-deprecating humour.  A bouquet for the longsuffering wife.

You so right Nautikos, Im sure replacing the addiction with a sport you
enjoy helped.  Gosh, you lucky bugger.  The odds for a bicycle versus a truck are not good for the bike or the rider.  Im glad it wasnt worse.  Obviously if you running marathons you recovered completly.  Good one.

I know what's involved. I started smoking when I was about 16. For years I was a very heavy smoker, but after I quit (cold turkey), a team of wild horses would not have been able to drag (no pun intended, lol) me back! I started running, and then, three years later, finished my first Marathon (26 miles and change). Best thing I ever did for myself - both the quitting and the running...So tell hubby to stop for bloody good...

Every pub in new zealand is smokefree. Its left a lot of smoker/drinkers
disgruntled.  I really feel for smokers. its such a hard addiction to give up.  You ve done well Nautikos.  My hubby has smoked since age 12.  He has stopped on and off since we married 25 years ago.  He has stopped for up to three years at a time.  We are having a smokefree period at the moment and we are just grateful for now.  What triggers off the addiction again is anybody s guess.  I do know he feels better when he's not smoking, and we save money.  He also really cant afford to smoke as he has heart, pressure and diabetes as part of his family history.  So we have to be glad he stops for long periods.
