it evolved from a very ancient way of dressing, where up in the Highlands people wore heavy, blanket-like garments, similar to the much lighter Roman garment of similar style, the toga. Roman soldiers wore a kilt-like skirt for hundreds of years, and even in Greece there are some military units still wearing a skirt similar to the Scottish kilt.

I think most if not all British Highland regiments still have the kilt as their dress uniform, and at the beginning of WWI they still wore it into battle.

NAut

Ive heard of kilts.. I just wondered how it got started.. seems kinda sissy to me. I like to think the Scots as rugged BraveHeart kinda men.. but even pretty Mel Gibson wore one..

ok.. the scene where they mooned the entire Britsh army was pretty hot though.. have to admit

Ha' ye ne'er been ta bonnie Scoland? It's an old celtic custom to wear the kilt, although not necessarily when drunk in the streets of Krakow...

I prefer men in pants.. or nothing .. who even thought a man should wear a skirt anyway? How did that get started?

Naut......
They'd solve their problem if they just tried to take up a collection for the poor man from their visitors....that's the quickest way I know to disperse a mob of Scotsmen........

Nautikos
As much as I admire the Scottish people - the movie, Braveheart, is responsible for that - I'm going to paraphrase an old saying, "When in Poland..." - I have (many) cousins, and an uncle, of very "healthy" Polish-American" ancestry, the "Janowiaks" - whom I'm sure would agree!
