Thanks, OTA - I'm trying to imagine the money saved so far. Over £5
which is nearly US$10. It's almost as good as having a part-time job!

Yes, Rumored - good advice - or, if I have no pen or paper or laptop,
I could at least start thinking of the subject matter of it. Or I could think of lists - i sometimes do that when I'm bored - lists of this and that.

Yes, Mneme - although I don't think I'm addicted to the drug -
I just like having cigarettes. It's rather like giving up watching films or TV - that's the hard part - the drug doesn't have an effect on me particularly.

Thanks, Afzal - i will need to be strong - but I should tell myself
that a year's not buying cigarettes is enough to buy a holiday. That shouldn't be so hard, should it?

That's funny, Neil! Well, I'm hoping to gamble in secret.
I may not always be able to gamble online - I may have to go to the betting shop. Actually it's not casinos but betting on sports events that I mainly do, plus some betting on financial markets.

Well done, Kabu. Lost weight? That's especially good.
I heard that people sometimes put on weight when they give up, because they eat more. That's another thing I'm alert to - not to substitute snacks for cigarettes! I have nothing - although coffee, tea or juice, milk etc are allowed, or the occasional few slices of bread - but not fatty stuff.

Thanks Offy - I shall be holding my (smoke free) breath
and hoping it works!

Thanks, Proc - second day and so far, so good.
Like your hubby, I have given up successfully before, too. As long as i don't keep buying them regularly that will be a successs. It doesn't matter if I have them occasionally. but the forthcoming smoking ban is a good thing because nights out or trips down the pub were the main thing that would tip me into buying occasional packets, and now this is going to be outlawed - although people will still be able to stand outside and smoke, i suppose. And maybe in the outdoor beer gardens at the back of the pubs.

Never having been a smoker (), I feel deprived knowing I can't experience the virtue of giving it up. Well done.. we'll be patient when your sonnets become grumpy.

I'm with you all the way. I gave up recently and my body still tries to trick me into having a draw. Evertime something goes wrong my mind tells me to fix it with a ciggy. Just stay alert the first week is the worst. I can now run up the stairs and I'm losing weight too.

Good luck.

Good for you that's the worst addiction to break
Good luck with it!!!

Im glad you are giving quitting a go. My poor hubby, bless him, has
struggled with this addiction for 36 years starting as he did at 12.  In the 27 years we been together he has stopped for up to periods of 2 years.  Then something triggers the longing.  Hes going through a smoke- free period right now so all Im doing is being grateful for each smoke-free time.  Its not an easy thing to do and my heart goes out to people caught in the grip of this addiction.  Goodluck.

Thanks, NewMoon - I feel OK so far. I've drunk one glass of wine only
and feel far better than if I'd downed a whole bottle and ten cigarettes.

Five years of huge savings and healthy lungs - can't be bad, Pelagus!

posted by Antonionioni on April 20, 2007 at 1:50 PM | link to this | reply

Hi Troosha
Why have Blogit changed the recently-installed reply to this comment button so that now you get the first line repeated, unhelpfully? Anyway, this is the first evening without cigarettes and it's friday so i bought a bottle of wine. Now previously, alcohol and cigarettes seemed intertwined to the extent that i didn't know how I would get through a drink of beer or wine without cigs. But i've found this evening that not having any cigs has lessened my desire to knock the drink back as quickly. I've had one glass of wine and I don't really want any more. Normally, with between five and ten cigarettes, by now I'd have finished the bottle. interesting. So hopefully I can save on cigarettes and on alcohol as i may only be drinking a thord as much from now on without the cigs.

Good luck with it...  I tried last month and didn't small ALL day for almost a month.  I allowed myself a few in the evening (they just go so nicely with a cocktail, don't they).  But I know that was my demise.  It has to be all or nothing, I guess.  I'll be cheering for you!
