The fact remains that Americans, both criminals and victims, are more highly armed than in any other western countries - and there are far, far more shootings. So however good your argument is in theory, it seems to fail in practice...

It apparently is not obvious to all that no decent person is safe in a country where guns are banned. The criminal can always get a gun! We can not always protect ourselves in many sorts of situations. It is totally insane to outlaw guns. If the one man who simply sacrificed himself for his students had a gun this would have been a different story. He survived the Holocaust and then told his students to jump out the windows and he took their bullets. Thank you for all the things you present us with.

In South Africa the carrying of firearms by both the lawful
and lawless hasnt stopped the carnage and senseless deaths of over 40  000 people a year.  In fact those with guns have often become victims because the killers disarm them and then use the guns against them.   Don't forget South Africa has a higher murder rate than the US which is 6 times bigger.  People even make their own guns in SA.  So Im not sure that arming everyone is a solution.  In South Africa I always felt threatened on going into town because there is constant crime and I ve been in the middle of a shootout once .  With everyone waving firearms and shooting at each other and bullets richocheting everywhere I didnt have time to figure out who were the good or bad guys.  I dived into the nearest shop.  I really dont know what the solution is. All I know is new zealand does not allow  guns except for huntting and there are very rare shooting incidents here.  And I feel safer than I felt in SA with everyone armed.

We have gun contro legislation here in Canada that is far stricter than probably anywhere in the US - and it has been a dismal and expensive (2 billion and counting) failure. Here's a little info:

LIBERAL CLAIM: [LIBERAL in this case referring to the Federal Liberal Party here in Canada] Statistics show significant declines in the use of firearms in homicides and robberies. These trends coincide with the introduction of firearms controls as far back as 1977, and more recently with the introduction of the Firearms Act in 1995.

THE TRUTH: Statistics Canada refuted this claim in response to Garry Breitkreuz's Order Paper Question Q-19 on November 29th, 2004. Statistics Canada's statement was in bold text and underlined: "The specific impact of the firearms program or the firearms registry cannot be isolated from other factors."

On July 28, 2004, Statistics Canada released their annual report on Robberies that stated: The robbery rate increased (+5%) for the first time since 1996. Robberies committed with a firearm increased (+10%) in 2003, and continue to account for about one in seven robberies.

The truth is that crooks will always be able to get guns, no matter what, and the honest citizen is defenseless!

You ban guns on campuses and someone can still get one illegally and sneak it in.  You put gun allowances in place and you simply arm more nut cases.

I think it would have been a fairer fight if both sides had the same weapons..See people like him seem to target those who would not...If one person had a defensive weapon I would lay you odds the death count would be far less...

It's a crazy situation.  I'm not really sure what it would take to keep people safe...if anything.

Corbin_Dallas,

Ok!  It is "lunacy", to suggest that armed citizens can prevent a person with a gun from carrying out his madness! Remember the cop in New York? What happens when law enforcement comes upon a situation where everybody is waving guns? Let us not go crazy here!

Stop the carnage in Iraq! Start there!

Racist???   Uhhhhh....where could you possible come up with that from this post???

I am putting forth a supposition....one that I happen to agree with.  I am not being confrontational with it.....just throwing it our for consumption and discussion.......

Corbin_Dallas,
You always have the research to put your point of view accross. Your work is reasoned and well crafted. But it always seems to ride the tide of the neo-conservative bullshit. There is always this "racist" tone to the writings. Did you write a piece on this "coward" who murdered the "children" in PA? Again I have no time to research!

A school can be no place for guns. It is of course true
that a killer will always find the gun he needs, but in the US, they make it very easy for them. Yes, America is the land of the free, but there is a price to pay for it.
