'make do for another month or so.'  Wow, mneme, that sounds awesome.   Today I had an email from my niece who lives in Queensland.  She says that there is a shortage of water.   I offered to send her some.

Hmm.. and I thought Australia was quirky. Houses here tend to be built carefully ignoring the coolness of winter and the heat of summer - that's why we need reverse-cycle air conditioning. Just a month into autumn, I need a throw for my knees. Surely it can't be time to crank up the heating already, we think to ourselves, and make do for another month or so.

Mmm?  I think you might find the tank, especially the 52 ton one, a bit too foundational.  Shop around and you might find the armored personnel carrier is a better fit.

But surely wooden treads would help them to float?

Personally, I'm planning to experiment with various colored tanks as foundational garments.  I'm thinking, some fabrics are simply too thin, and a tank sewn to a matching slip or skirt might eliminate some problems.

As long as they don't have wooden treads...

I think they've improved the Dutch tanks, strat.   Now they are driven by windmills and every tank has a sump pump built in as well as air conditioning.  Clever people these Dutch.

Regardless of a country's size, johnmacnab, arms sales are one of the
most lucrative businesses on the planet.  It's not that these countries have or have need of these war weapons, it's that they can produce them for profit.  And Canada's woes in this matter are not solitary.  The United States, with arguably the most advanced and best equipped military on the planet, has had exactly the same problem with their armored vehicles, so...

Hmmm...Dutch tanks?
Well, they might work, if they've been able to keep the sea out of downtown Amsterdam for the last 500 years.

You could be right, Corbin, but we could buy them.  Of course the thing is that tanks were supposed to be obsolete with the invention of armour piercing rockets - or should I say IED's?

Pat
Maybe Germany isn't allowed to make them, Pat, but perhaps they can buy them - which is something we should have done.  I don't know who makes tanks, I must look it up.

I forgot about the UK's helicopter situation, mneme.  As for Canada, I assumed that such a rich country would have up to date methods of defending itself - but then I remember that new houses are being built close to us without water or sewage connection.  A strange country indeed.

So it is all about how you get on with your neighbours?   No change there then is there, smartdog?

I can't argue with your simple answers, Chilitree.

Perhaps the Liberal government that controlled your country for decades....
turned too many sword factories to the making of plowshares??? There was no place to readily build them???

I didn't know Germany - under terms of WWII surrender -

was allowed to fabricate weapons of war. I'm surprised, but I guess I shouldn't be.  Don't get the connection - you have to buy a hundred from our neighbor so we can lease you fifty. Is it all one mfg. company?

Sad but true - our own incompetence is responsible for the loss of our people - if they were properly armed and shielded, they'd be safer. Of course if they'd return home they'd be out of harm's way.

Hard to answer.. . Tony Blair doesn't know either. Britain uses 30-year old helicopters that fly into each other, I saw yesterday. I'm quite surprised at the statistics you quote, too.

Whoa Mac..dreary stuff.
I guess our youth has gotten the better (or worst) of us.  We shouldn't be over there at all.

Question 1: You have to remember that Europe was born out of waring countries, and Germany was often involved.  Also they are right next to Russia and I'm sure they are a little nervous about that.

Question 2: Holland (The Netherlands) is right next to Germany - so, if Germany has a lot of tanks...

Question 3: This is not said to sound arrogant, but Canada is allied with and right next to the U.S. whos government spends more on defense than all the other major powers in the world combined.  Why spend on defense when you can have your neighbor defend you on their bill?

Those are my answers.
