What is American?
Emma Lazarus said it best:

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Emma Lazarus, 1883

Thank you for being a fine representative of America!

Blonde, well done girl. Christ, I feel ashamed of whinging about my lot.
At least I've got a roof over my head.  She is adorable, you couldn't but want to help her.  Blonde, Oprah caught flak for going to Africa to open a school because apparently when she asked kids in the U.S. schools what they wanted it was iPods & Nikes.  Some kids just need a chance.

There was a lovely news story about a charity here named Bóthar (means Road) which took donations to sponsor gifts of animals to third world families.  An African student (think she was going to be an intern for someone in the U.S. government) came back to a family in Kerry to thank them personally for sponsoring a goat that was given to her family.  This enabled them to sell milk, so she didn't have to quit school, she got an education, therefore she got a chance.

I'm not prone to religion, but Blonde you bring out the Catholic in me, sincerely, bless you.

Thanks girl! Wish you could have seen her playing and being happy....that was such a joy for me....we brought them over some food and toys for the children......it is amazing to see happiness from a child that lives in such conditions.

She's a doll. Those really are horrible conditions. I don't know why anyone would be critical of anyone who helps people..That's what makes them special, like you!

In my travels in Asia I found the poverty incredibly confronting, particularly seeing little kids with nothing. It gives a powerful sense of how much is taken for granted in more affluent societies.. she's a sweet little girl and I'm glad you help people along the way as you travel.
