To Bunny:

You wrote, "As a non-Christian, you're the last person who should be declaring 'what Christians should be'!"

Hard to misinterpret that!  And I was careful to indicate that not all Christians were under my judgement.

From Bunny

I'm not Christian and I never was.

And I didn't say you shouldn't comment on Christianity. I said you are not in a position to declare that all Christians should believe and act a certain way. Maybe you didn't intend to do this, but that is the viewpoint I get from reading your post.

of course you don't need a building at all
the church is meant to be an entity rather than a building.
But sometimes one does wants a beautiful building. I attended a funeral at a lovely old church last week and for that kind of occasion it offers some comfort that venue, the service and everything about it is something over and above the ordinary.

I meant austere . . . .
But that is only based on what I have read that Christ taught.  Didn't he teach outside, on the roads, on the sides of hills, in people's homes?  We have no examples or teachings in any of the Gospels that Christ wanted any sort of buildings.  Who was it that said, "Wherever two or three are gathered in My name . . ."?

Do you mean austerity?
Or do you think these days that might translate as simplicity in architecture and design.
Re very grand church buildings - I think that it is a good thing to have lovely grand churches as long as they are open to everyone. It is t good to see people from all walks of life brought together in grand and beautiful buildings be it churches, schools or government buildings.
