Indeed soldiers must be motivated to defend the country instead of just criticising

Beats,
You have a good idea. I think there are a few bad apples in any bunch. I guess the media has to root them out for stories every now and then.

Yeah some other soldiers may just have a little private meeting with this guy too..For the most part the soldiers are anti press and politics but very pro getting their jobs done!

corbin,
I know you are right on the score about making a story up. They just found some guilible young guys who are trying to just make it through a terrible war.

scoop,
I feel for these young guys. They were almost assuredly taken advantage of. Yet, they still have to suck it up and do what the army should have taught them. I know they have nothing to lose and their hands are tied a lot of times from fighting, but again they have to do what is right. The higher ups need to step down and make a statement while they are in the war. It looks bad when they quit and then complain. We need to go to the Iraqi's and make them fight. We can help and offer assistance, but they have to take up the fight. We have been at this long enough.

I don't do this very often because it feels too much like self promotion

but here is another point of view from my own soldier.

The Washington Post......how many soldiers do you think they went through to get to this young man?   They were digging for the response.....and based on their record, had they not found one....they would have made one up.

Echo

Black Pearl, well said.  Thank you so much for the post.  My son is due back here in the next couple days for a short visit. This is very much on my heart.

God Bless, indeed.

sarooster just to add this

the only thing these young kids have to lose is their life or being kicked out for what they may feel is for speaking the truth.

On the other hand

maybe these young soldiers and marines who may be 19,20,21 who are doing the fighting and see the REAL deal up close and personal, know more then us.

But how many times have we seen recently retired majors, colonels and even generals, who served in Iraq speak up and tell us how bad it REALLY is.

The difference is a young pfc. or lance corporal has nothing to lose while the higher ranking officer won't speak up until they are discharged out of fear of screwing up their retirement.

There is always to side to a story.

Pearl1,

I also think the media knows they can take advantage of these young soldiers and then report this back home to us. They are not responsible either. But, the soldiers that did this are just plain wrong. There is no way even the most ardent of war activists could defend them. If this is the way they think and feel they need to leave the military. Thanks for the read.

Hi, sarooster,

Unfortunately, I have to admit that I have a problem with "soldiers" who seem to forget the oath, which they freely took, and then go on to "vent" about their personal feelings when things are not going the way they think they should, looking for someone to blame, mostly, instead of moving on through it.  Certainly, I disagree with many, MANY, decisions that have been made for me, but I drive on through whatever I know to be a lawful order.  Trust me, I do my fair share of grumbling.

One of our great misfortunes/disadvantages at this time is that too many people forget that there is a reason we're told not to talk to the press about certain things at certain times.  Too many of us are too young, too ignorant, or too indifferent to understand or care that we are undermining ourselves with such careless talk for the sake of venting.  God knows that I so much admire and applaud our troops for taking on such tremendous responsibility and duty in places that I'm thankful not to be, or have yet to go, but I get equally embarrassed and upset by those who choose to "wax political" and go on to spout nonsense that undermines their efforts and sacrifices in what has already proven to be a difficult and painful campaign.  God bless us.

bel,
You are very correct. Look, the army does not operate like the civilian world. Our soldiers have to do what they are told and do it to the best of their ability. If this is the way the whole regiment thinks, then I can see why we are in bad shape in this war. Thanks for the read and comment.

Actually

these days the soldiers are told to only "talk about what you know" and not make assumptions to the press.  I have to say talking with many, many soldiers, I suspect they had to do some serious searching to find these guys because this is not the message I am getting from those I know.  While they all agree we need to do something different the attitude I keep hearing from most is that they want a large influx of troops and for the PC crap to be dropped so they can do their job and go home.

Yes, they want to come home, who wouldn't?  But most do not want this mission to end before it is done.

My overall feeling is this, they signed the papers and many have done so more than once, either do your job or get out when you next enlistment comes up.
